How to choose the perfect engagement ring

July 2020 | Dawn Creative Collaborator

Shape

Did you know 6 out of 10 people choose round to be their preferred shape, set in a solitaire setting? The next most popular is cushion, followed by a princess cut (square), then oval, pear, emerald, and lastly heart. At Say It With Diamonds we always aim to give all our customers an excellently cut diamond, whatever shape they choose.

Setting

Pave setting is when the ring has diamonds on the band, whereas a halo setting is recommended to make the main stone “pop”. This is great to give the smaller stone that bigger look for less; if you want to go that extra mile you can always add on an extra halo. This is for you if you like that ‘more is better’ look. A Trilogy setting is when a larger stone sits with a smaller one on either side of it. These days it’s a little less popular choice if you’re getting engaged for the first time, but it’s somewhat very popular for those that are getting married for the second time.

Clarity

Should you choose a round diamond, you can get away with less on the clarity of the stone, whereas if you opt for emerald we recommend a high clarity. However, this then affects the price in a negative way; this is because it's almost like a sheet of glass and you can see all imperfections more clearly.

Size

Our statistics show that 40% of all engagement rings need resizing, and we offer this service free of charge on all rings bought from us! The average size for him is an S and the average size for her is L 1⁄2, but if you do happen to get it wrong, just pop into the store and we’ll get it sorted for you.

Metal

The most popular metal is Platinum. This is the best metal to go for as it is the most hard wearing and durable, and will not need re-dipping unlike gold does every 1-2 years. 18ct white gold is the next most popular and looks the same as platinum, followed by rose gold then and lastly traditional yellow gold. We do not recommend silver for our engagement bands.

Certification

We recommend choosing a GIA graded diamond. GIA certified” and “GIA cert” are commonly used in the jewelry industry to refer to diamonds that have undergone GIA's rigorous grading process and to the reports that accompany them. GIA represents 80% of the world's diamond market. De Beers and Cartier both use GIA graded diamonds.
